How it works

How does UberNetworks work, and how is it better?

UberNetworks Voice Services take advantage of much higher quality voice codecs than typical providers, alleviating the pain of terrible voice quality or jitter and stuttering. This is made possible by providing the voice service over our High-Performance Wireless Broadband Service. More specifically, we use the G711 voice codec, which enables the highest possible call quality, and we only allow the service to be provided over our broadband infrastructure.

With a typical fixed line broadband connection, the connection itself has a maximum throughput limit. This is commonly referred to in kb/s - for example 2000 kilobits per second which is a 2Mbit connection. Like all internet-based applications or programs, VoIP over a typical broadband connection is subject to these throughput (speed) limits. Similarly to this is the usage on your broadband data allowance. If you have a 1 Gigabyte data cap, using VoIP will attribute to use of this limit. This is where UberNetworks VoIP shines through with a ground breaking innovation.

Having UberNetworks VoIP is comparable to having a dedicated phone connection. The connection is not subject to the quality problems experienced by other companies who share access with common internet usage such as web browsing, online games or file downloads.

For example you may have a 2 Megabit per second internet connection at home:

  • Your daughter is doing some homework research on Wikipedia about the corrosive properties of spider nests
  • Your son is having a bash with some Forza Motorsport on Xbox Live, racing against competitors from all over New Zealand
  • And a family friend has popped over for a visit with his laptop to download Windows updates

and if you had VoIP over a typical fixed line broadband connection:

Assuming the above activities utilise your internet connection to its limit, another VoIP phone would be rendered almost useless. If you could even make a call, the delay and stutter would make it a waste of your time.

But with UberNetworks VoIP over an UberNetworks wireless broadband connection:

Having an UberNetworks VoIP connection is just like having an entirely separate internet connection just for your phone. All of the aforementioned activities would go completely unnoticed to someone using UberNetworks VoIP.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Does the phone use data, and does it count to my data cap?

A:  Yes, VoIP does use data, and on the UberNetworks broadband network it uses a tremendous amount of it. This is because we use one of the highest quality ‘codecs’ to enable the highest possible sound quality.  You'll be pleased to know that VoIP data does not count towards your monthly data allowance.

Q:  How is your service different to the service offered by other providers?

A:  Just a few of the differences are: our phone traffic is prioritised above other traffic on our network; we use a higher quality codec; the phone calls do not count towards your monthly data cap and we monitor network status to ensure the highest possible level of service.

Q:  Can I make 111 calls?

A:  Yes, you can. However, at this stage the 111 service will not be able to trace your address in the way they can with a Telecom provided phone number.

Q:  Can I keep my current phone number?

A:  Yes you can. You simply pay a one time $25 fee. The fee is charged by Telecom and is not something we have any control over.

Q:  Can we fax or use Eftpos?

A:   Yes, you can, but you will need to let us know if you plan to use these technologies as they are not enabled by default.

Q: Is there any term agreement associated with your phone service?

A: No. Once you pay the connection fee you own the SPA device outright and there is no obligation to use our service for any longer than you like.
